Philip E. Agre is a former associate professor of information studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. His new media writing includes the essay, Surveillance and Capture. He was successively the publisher of The Network Observer (TNO) and The Red Rock Eater News Service (RRE). TNO ran from January 1994 until July 1996. RRE, an influential mailing list he started in the mid-1990s, ran for around a decade. A mix of news, Internet policy and politics, RRE served as a model for many of today's political blogs and online newsletters.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_E._Agre (more)

IBM is ramping up its push into Virtual World-s with an investment of roughly US$10 million over the next year, including an expanded presence within Second Life and the development of its own 3D intranet... The company's move into virtual worlds is due in large part to the efforts of its "MultiVerse evangelists," IanHughes (Epredator Potato) and RooReynolds (Algernon Spackler in-world), who said last month that IBM wanted to make "v-business" a priority just as it championed "e-business" during the dot-com boom... "In addition to our desire to work more closely with Linden Lab, we're exploring how we can work with many virtual world players, including companies like MultiVerse and Bigworld Technology, as well as Open Source platforms like Universe.org," the spokesman said in an email. "IBM's ultimate aim is for inter-world integration, instead of separate islands of virtual worlds, where you cannot cross over from one to the other in a consistent way."

Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a division of Facebook Inc., released on March 28, 2016.[3] This is the first generation device,[1] and is succeeded by Oculus Rift S, scheduled for release in spring of 2019.[3] Oculus initiated a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to fund the Rift's development, after being founded as an independent company two months prior. The project proved successful, raising US$2.5 million.[4] In March 2014, Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion.[5][6] In March 2017, after three years at the company, it was announced Oculus founder and creator Palmer Luckey was leaving Facebook. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus_Rift

Joseph John Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was an American Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's most well-known work is his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero (Hero's Journey) shared by world mythologies, termed the monomyth. Since the publication of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell's theory has been applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists. His philosophy has been summarized by his own often repeated phrase: "Follow your bliss."[6] He gained recognition in Hollywood when George Lucas credited Campbell's work as influencing his Star Wars saga. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Campbell

Interesting profile of Sean Parker. Besides serving as Mark Zuckerberg’s comrade-in-arms, Parker also worked to bolster his partner’s position, so what happened to Parker at Plaxo could never be repeated at Thefacebook. In the financing that Parker negotiated with Peter Thiel, as well as a much larger deal signed seven months later with the Accel Partners venture-capital firm, Parker was able to negotiate for Zuckerberg something almost unheard of in a venture-funded start-up: absolute control for the entrepreneur. Because of that, Zuckerberg, to this day, allocates three of Facebook’s five board seats (including his own). Without that control, FaceBook would almost certainly have been sold to either Yahoo or Microsoft, whose C.E.O., Steve Ballmer, offered $15 billion for it in the fall of 2007—only to be met with a blank stare from the then 23-year-old Zuckerberg. Oculus' timewarp game has live actors, and it's nuts. The Under Presents takes place in a sprawling absurdist world, but its home base is a nightclub-like space in the hull of a hulking overturned ship, where whimsical stage acts perform (often played by live actors in VR). (more)
